Medical Marijuana

- Ted Davis is the Enemy!

July 19, 2018 - A 2017 Elon University poll discovered that 80% of North Carolinians polled were in favor of legalizing medical marijuana in the state. This is welcome news to the many people suffering from troubling medical conditions that could likely be treated with cannabis-based medicine. However, the question remains as to when our General Assembly is going to act to bring North Carolina into the 21st century on this issue, and legalize medical marijuana.

You might be asking "When will there be proposed legislation for this?" The fact is that there have been many proposals in the General Assembly to legalize medical marijuana over the last few years. "Well then," you might ask "How did the voting go on those proposals? Are we at least getting close to having this passed?" The sad fact is that there have been no votes! Each and every one of these proposals has been sent to a legislative committee to die!!

"80% of North Carolinians polled were in favor of legalizing medical marijuana in the state."

In 2017, House Bill 185 - North Carolina Medical Cannabis Act was proposed. Within 5 days of being proposed, this bill was sent to the House Committee on Rules, Calendar, and Operations of the House. The bill languished there, and was never sent to the floor of the House for a vote. The Vice Chair of this committee is Ted Davis. If Ted Davis was at all concerned with getting this proposed legislation passed, you would think he could use his influence as Vice Chair to at least get the bill out of committee.

In addition, this year House Bill 994 was proposed. This would have decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana (under 4 ounces) for personal use, such as for use with cannabis-based medical treatment. This bill was sent to the House Judicial I Committee, which is chaired by Ted Davis. It has languished there, and likely was "dead on arrival." Again, if Rep. Davis had ANY interest in seeing reforms in our marijuana laws, he certainly could have used his influence as Chair to get this bill out of the committee, and up to the floor for a vote.

"The sad fact is that there have been no votes! Each and every one of these proposals
has been sent to a legislative committee to die!!"

One might argue that it is possible that Ted Davis was simply outvoted within those committees. This is indeed possible, but highly unlikely. Rep. Davis has not uttered ONE word of support for medical marijuana. Not in the media, not on social media, not anywhere! In any case, at best, Ted Davis is a "do nothing" when it somes to this type of legislation, and unwilling to expend any political capital on it. At worst (and much more likely), he is the enemy of medical marijuana and is using his committee leadership positions to actively ensure that medical cannabis legislation NEVER sees the light of day.

"Decisions about medical treatment should be left solely to patients and their doctors."

The fact is that the unmitigated gall of Ted Davis and his anti-marijuana comrades in the General Assembly is astounding! People across the state are suffering now. More and more research is coming to light that proves that marijuana is effective for treating: chronic and acute pain, ADHD, bipolar disorder, epilepsy, seizures, cancer, and it's even possible it helps people kick opiate addictions. And that's just an abbreviated list. Many others exist! Last time I checked Ted Davis was an attorney by trade. He has a "JD" next to his name. He does NOT have an "MD" next to it! It really takes an arrogant SOB to think that he, and his cronies up there in the General Assembly, should be the ones deciding your medical treatment. Decisions about medical treatment should be left solely to patients and their doctors.
